A FRIENDSHIP formed while studying at Murdoch University in the early 2000s has been a great success for Dan Osborn and Vincenzo Perrella, who are filming their third short film of the year.
Thanks to government funding to produce the short film It’s Just Gary, Osborn and Perrella will wrap up filming of their new comedy this week.
Osborn said It’s Just Gary was a fast-paced comic-satire that explored issues of celebrity, hysteria and media-hype.
“Gary is a likeable every-man who goes unnoticed in a world where the commercial media reigns supreme,” he said.
“But when he starts the hype machine rolling, Gary experiences the full force of the cult of celebrity.”
The film displays a stellar cast of WA actors, including Bill McCluskey, Damon Lockwood (who plays Gary), Peter Holland and Sam Longley.
Osborn and Perrella, who have written a number of scripts together and are constantly developing new projects, have recently had success with another short film called This is Perth, which was created without funding and became one of the most viewed clips from WA on youtube of all time.
It received more than 70,000 online hits in the first week.
It’s Just Gary, shot in and around the City of Perth, is the biggest project the pair has worked on. They are hopeful the story of Gary can make it into festivals once complete.
Osborn said they hoped to complete post-production and have the film finished by early next year.
“We want to have a premiere screening of the film once it is ready,” he said.
