I Have Greatly Exaggerated the News of My Death

7/11/2008

Greetings all,

First of all, let me apologise profusely to my readers  -- all four of you, yes, you know who you are, you magnificent creatures -- about my recent posting lull.

Unlike Thrillsville, who at least has the sexy and thrilling excuse of becoming a roller.... more »

A Rubbish Thing to Do

17/10/2008

Can someone tell me why, when some people see a vacant piece of land, they feel an irresistible urge to treat it like their personal rubbish tip?

My mother has a block of land that she bought two years ago, after many years of saving*. She still has to save a little more money before she can build her dream house on it.

Every few weeks, we go to the site to check that.... more »

Some Tips for New Holiday Hosts

10/10/2008

Doesn't it feel like there's a sprinkling of holiday dust in the air? Suddenly Christmas isn't that far away. (I know this to be true, because I went to Garden City on the weekend and they've already started selling those bulk packs of fundraising Christmas cards.)

Hopefully, some of you will be more »

Travel and Broaden Your Mind

3/10/2008

It discomforts me to hear about people who don't like to travel.

Take, for example, a recent letter that appeared in the Ask Bossy blog at News.com.au.

(Ask Bossy is one of my guilty pleasures. People anonymously write in to Bossy, a.k.a. Kate de Brito, about their problems, Bossy usually replies with something sensible (and.... more »

Slaves to the Lawn

24/09/2008

Oh no. It's starting to get warm.

I heard some flies buzzing around the screen door the other day -- one of the signature sounds of the Australian summer.

It sent a prickle down my spine.

You see, our sprinklers broke down a year ago, and we still haven’t fixed them. Partly because the colossal power of my family's combined procrastination could power a second.... more »

The Secret Lives of Authors

17/09/2008

Writing is a funny vocation. I don't know about you, but when I've finished writing something, I usually feel quite limp and wrung out, like I've donated a little too much blood and a spleen has fallen out as well. A glass of orange juice and a hard lolly just isn't going to cut it.

The exception to this is when I’ve started a passionate rant about, say, people who don’t check the.... more »

The Nanna Experience

10/09/2008

I had the pleasure of visiting a friend's grandparents a few weeks ago, and when I entered their house I thought, isn't it funny how similar Nanna houses are?

For one, there is the Nanna smell, composed of talc (with a base of old-fashioned roses or lavender), polished wood, a hint of shag carpet, and fruit cake (depending on the time of day).

Sometimes it is hard to narrow.... more »

Running is an Essential Survival Skill

3/09/2008

Run! Run! Run!

That's JonnyB going for a jog around the picturesque Norfolk village that he calls home.

Jonny's Private Secret Diary is one of my favourite online reads. In March this year it appeared in the Observer's list of the world's 50 most powerful blogs1. I like.... more »
