A POP-up shop will serve coffee from a Leederville parking bay for the next four months.
City of Vincent council approved an on-road Oxford Street cafe to help create community spaces for the suburb.
Mayor Alannah MacTiernan said the City had already received positive feedback about the new outdoor site.
“It’s doing two things – it’s showing people how you can use the road space as an alternative to parking and it being ‘pop up’ creates a bit of change, so this thing will appear in various places,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“It adds a bit of seasonality. It will create a bit of excitement by the fact that it moves around.”
She said the initiative gave people an idea of just what could be achieved by giving up a few car bays.
“It’s possible that we will do more of those – one of the things that we are wanting to do is put bike racks on the street so we get more bike facilities,” she said.
“We just have to continue going out there and reinventing these spaces – adding a bit of dynamism.
“That’s what people are really looking for.
“They don’t want everything to always be the same so this just adds a bit of experimentation and I think that’s what people are looking for in areas like ours.”
