KIEL Williams-Weigel’s dedication and passion to his school community has been deservedly honoured.

The Clontarf Aboriginal College literacy co-ordinator recently won the Naidoc Youth of the Year award, paying tribute to his desire to influence and mentor students.

Mr Williams-Weigel (24), a proud Mununjali descendant of the Beaudesert region in Queensland, was humbled by the accolade.

“It is a great honour and feels pretty amazing,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed teaching the past couple of years at Clontarf and have met the goals I have set. It can be a tough gig but I love tackling challenges.”

He believed it was important to be a positive role model for the students.

“I love being involved in indigenous studies and, hopefully, I can inspire and influence the students,” he said.

“The students have made great strides and we now have a literacy centre at the school, so the improvement has been really positive.”

He said his future goal was to become a school principal.
